Reading is Fundamental! I learned that from tv!
Here I go, blatantly stealing again. This is a concept that I found out about from my pal Catie's book page. She found out about it from her friend, and so on, and so on, and so on.
At any rate, the concept is that you list the books, magazines and other things that you've read. I don't read as much as, well, a lot of people that I know. I do, however, read occasionally. I'm one of those sorts that generally have seven or eight things going at once. Reading doesn't always take priority. But I do read.
And listed below are the books and plays and short stories (yes, I do read If you have books you think I ought to try, feel free to drop me a line.
December 2004
The Silver Chair, C.S. Lewis -- 12.29.04 A (Another re-read of a
classic and very charming. I read it specifically for one character,
Rilian, who doesn't really have that much of a presence, but I loved Jill,
Eustace and Puddleglum. Yay Narnia!)
November 2004
A Wrinkle In Time, Madeline L'Engle -- 11.18.04 A
(I loved this series very much the first time I read it,
many moons ago. This is a re-read and it doesn't have the
same magical feel as once was, but it's still pretty good!)
October
2004
Furies of Calderon, Jim Butcher -- 10.31.04 B+
(Okay, it's Jim. It gets extra points. Your adolescent
male hero fantasy. Not quite epic, yet, as he's not
saving the world but he's working on it. I like Tavi. I
like the Marat. I'll be interested to see where it goes.)
September
2004
Lion's Blood, Steven Barnes -- 09.30.04 C (Yeah, I
slacked my way through this one. Interesting concept and I
cared about the characters for a while, but the
semi-scattered POV just didn't sustain the plot for the
whole 600 pages. There's a sequel. I'll probably read it.)
August
2004
In Camelot's Shadow, Sarah Zettel -- 08.05.04 A+ (I admit it, I'm a sucker for an Arthurian story, but Sarah handled this one *really* nicely. Can't wait for more of the series.)
July 2004
Private Maneuvers, Catherine Mann -- 07.17.04 B+ (I really like Cathy's writing style. Very nice chemistry between hero and heroine. A little slow in places, but a good book overall.)
June 2004
Night Watch, Suzanne Brockmann -- 06.17.04 A (It's Brockmann. That's all I have to say.)
The Inn at Oak Creek, Linda Barrett -- 06.04.04 B (An author who writes at about my standard level of sensuality. Wow. Not a bad book.
Not a thrilling page-turner, but not bad.)
Evans Above, Rhys Bowen -- 06.01.04 B+ (I've been meaning to get to this series for a while. A quick read, but I had the murderer
figured out very early on. Odd. Not a bad read, though.
May 2004
Hot Pursuit, Christina Skye -- 05.28.04 B+ (I like SEALs. End of statement. I think this book is a little bigger than it
needs to be, but I like SEALs.)
Some Men's Dreams, Kathleen Korbel -- 05.09.04 B
(Medical romance, really. I like doctors, and I really
particularly liked the heroine, Gen, in this book.)
April
2004
Secret-Agent Sheik, Linda Winstead Jones -- 04.28.04 B+
(What is *with* these romance titles? Ahem. Quick read, a hero I
wouldn't mind ending up with, but the title. Guh.)
Without a Past,
Debra Salonen -- 04.26.04 C (Second in
a trilogy about the Sullivan triplets. I *really* liked the first one.
This one, not so much. *Great* hero, eh conflict and plot.)
The Shadow of
Albion, Andre Norton and Rosemary
Edghill -- 04.20.04 B- (Recommended for the fact that Gambit makes an
appearance. No, not the mutant, but a character that's him without
the powers. Interesting world, but holy Regency writing, Batman.)
The
Charmed Sphere, Catherine Asaro -- 04.08.04 C (The first
Luna I've read. Started out strong. Way too much said-ism, though.
Will have to read more of her stuff to see if that's normal for
her.)
The Glasswright's Apprentice, Mindy Klasky
-- 04.06.04 B (Very interesting world and an engaging heroine. Will be
interesting to see how she grows through the series.)
March
2004
The Marriage Medallion, Christine Rimmer --
03.29.04 A (The last book in the Viking trilogy. Now I
want to read the fourth!)
Freefall, Raeanne Thayne -- 03.27.04
A (Ms. Thayne's books keep getting better. We should all be so lucky.)
Accessory to Marriage, Ann Voss Peterson -- 03.23.04
A (Quick read, well told Intrigue. Nasty villain! Really nasty!)
Sarah's Baby(no jokes!), Margaret Way -- 03.22.04
B- (This is written in a very interesting style. Almost omniscient
sometimes. The problem is, there are lots of POV switches, and
the characters react *super fast* to major conflicts.)
Dragon Sleeping, Craig Shaw Gardner
-- 03.18.04 B (This is an 'old' book. Interesting premise and might make
me look for the other books, but a little slow.)
February
2004
Prince and Future . . . Dad?, Christine Rimmer --
02.28.04 A- (Cute! Sappy title and the resolution happened
really fast, but cute! Part of a series I like, so I'm
biased.)
Heartbreak Hero, Frances Housden -- 02.26.04 D
(Great beginning. Multiple POV switches and way too much about the sex.)
My
Lady's Trust, Julia Justiss -- 02.20.04 INC (Not my style
of writing or language, unfortunately.)
One Of These Nights, Justine
Davis -- 02.17.04 A (I enjoyed this one much more!)
Lord of the Fire Lands, Dave Duncan -- 02.11.04
A+ (Not sure why it's taking me so long to get through this
series, but the first two books are both excellent!)
January
2004
Truth or Lies, Kylie Brant -- 01.21.04 A- (Quick read, almost a perfect setup though the end got predictable.)
Just Another Day in Paradise, Justine Davis -- 01.19.04
B- (No real spark. Not a chore to read, just no over the top
oomph.)
Colorado Confidential, Jasmine Cresswell, Amanda Stevens,
Debra Lee Brown -- 01.14.04 C+ (Amanda's contribution got the book
a better grade. I don't think I like anthologies, though.)
Baby, Oh Baby!, Robin Wells -- 01.10.04
A (Any book that makes me sniffly deserves an A. I'm such a sap.)
A Summer Affair, Susan
Wiggs -- 01.06.04 B- (unusual
for me. I really like Susan's stuff, but this one just didn't grab me.)
